The album is divided into three sections, with each disc being a separate collection in its own. It borrows from Tom Waits’ rock sound, with the first disc being blues and rock-based, the second centred on slow-tempo, melancholic ballads, and the third on more experimental compositions.

Orphans is the most unwieldy Tom Waits collection yet. Packaged in a Cibachrome-tinted box are three discs containing 56 songs total. It claims 30 new tunes, but a mere 14 can be found on other records - six others have to be hunted for while the remainder have shown up in various incarnations.

UPDATE January 2018: I am looking for Bawlers Disc 1. I will pay good money for it or I can trade a Brawlers Disc 1 for it. Attention: I have traded with another user, so my original post is no longer accurate. I’d like to trade for a disc in comparable shape.

Summary: Unlike typical rarities compilations, this 3-disc set includes 30 brand-new recordings-in addition to the usual mix of covers, soundtrack selections, and other previously uncompiled material. It's like getting three new Waits albums at once.

Orphans is divided into three discs of rocking blues songs (Brawlers), melancholic ballads (Bawlers), and wild experimentations (Bastards). Tom Waits is widely considered a genius. While he hasn’t achieved any real mainstream recognition (his famous songs were mostly made famous by other people such as Rod Stewart), he can still be considered immensely popular. Bawlers is the best disc followed by Brawlers, Bastards is the weakest of the three but it's still very solid. I don't listen to all of the discs at once because they are so different from one another. I didn't think Waits would be able to produce such a quality triple-disc album since most double-disc albums are crammed with filler but this is a completely different case.
