Compiling a list of classic Bruce Springsteen songs is both easy and a challenge. It’s simple because there’s so much from which to choose. But it’s also a challenge for that very reason, given the vast catalogue The Boss spawned over the past 40 years.
Bruce Springsteen Albums Ranked Worst to Best. Ultimate Classic Rock. Because he spent so many of his formative years painstakingly crafting his albums, we don’t often think of Bruce Springsteen as a prolific artist. But when you look at the entries on our list of Bruce Springsteen Albums, Ranked from Worst to Best, you'll notice that he’s averaged an album nearly every other year throughout his recording career, which began in 1973. There are very few rockers of his vintage about whom that can be said. While he's associated with straightforward bar band rock n' roll, looking at some of his lesser-known works reveal a willingness to experiment, either with short stories set to spare arrangements (Devils & Dust). folk music (We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions) and lush, orchestral pop (Working on a Dream).
Bruce Springsteen has always been immune to the usual trappings of your average career in rock music. His discography doesn’t always follow a logical development, but takes left turn after left turn to continually subvert standard expectations due to Springsteen’s willingness to follow his artistic whims without a thought to mainstream appeal. Funnily enough, that’s exactly the key to his longevity and continual success in American music, but it also makes his albums uniquely hard to compare . Even Bruce’s normally stellar lyrics fail on this outing. The best Springsteen albums work as a whole, featuring the same musical styles and songwriting themes explored in interesting new ways across every track.

Greatest Hits is Bruce Springsteen's first compilation album, released February 27, 1995, on Columbia Records. It is a collection of some of Springsteen's hit singles and popular album tracks through the years along with four new songs at the end, mostly recorded with the E Street Band in 1995. The latter constituted Springsteen's first (albeit very partial) release with his backing band since the late 1980s. Some of the songs are shorter versions of the original album releases.
In 1980 he released a double album, The River, that rather than being bloated and overblown was a collection of sharply written and fervently performed pop songs that heightened his mainstream profile. Surely, then, he would keep that momentum, release another rock album? Not exactly - he put out the dark, primarily acoustic Nebraska instead in 1982. When you’re dealing with a retrospective like this for an artist like Bruce Springsteen, it’s hard to find your entry point, to figure out who you’re writing for. It’s harder still when confronted with a recording career spanning four decades that has more twists and turns than are readily apparent. There have been two narratives in Springsteen’s career that have long interested me. The first is the perpetual pull between romanticism and realism within his career, his shifts between mythologizing and reporting.
Bruce Springsteen's recording career spans more than forty years, beginning with 1973's.
