People Like Us is the fifth and final studio album released by the American folk rock vocal group The Mamas and the Papas. Released in November 1971, (three years after the group originally split) the album came to be because the former members of the group were still under contract with Dunhill Records
The Mamas & The Papas. People Like Us (LP, Album). Probe, ABC/Dunhill Records. I remember Dave Marsh of Rolling Stone and Robert Christgau absolutely savaging this record when it came out - underservedly, really. Yes, it was a last gasp - it came years after the group's official "breakup" and had the scent of a money grab at first. Papa John's lyrics weren't as incisive as they once had been; you could see the toll the H had been taking on him, both musically (and personally, in the cover photos). Yes, it had that slick '70s soft-rock sheen.

The Mamas & the Papas broke up in 1968, but they still owed an album on their contract with Dunhill Records (later absorbed by MCA). So, three years later, they reunited to make People Like Us and complete their obligation. But the release did not rekindle interest in the Mamas & the Papas, and this was their last new album.

This album came to be because the former members of the group were still under contract with Dunhill Records. According to their contract, the group had to produce one more album, or else be in breach of contract and subject to possible fines. While the album has some memorable songs, it was considered a disappointment by fans and critics. It did not sell well upon its release. It was produced by John Phillips. All tracks except "I Wanna Be a Star" (written by Michelle Phillips) were written by John Phillips, making "People like Us" the Mamas and Papas's only entirely.
