The first album from the Alloy Orchestra, a Boston-based trio devoted to the creation of new soundtracks for vintage silent films led by the late Caleb Sampson, is a sampler of passages from a variety of scores intended more as an overview of what the group can do than a complete artistic statement of its ow. Thrilling and often quite humorous, the music on Silents is of interest even to those who aren't particular film fans.

The phrase silent film is, of course, a misnomer. Screenings of the 1920s were hardly quiet. The soundtrack for any given showing depended, in large part, on the setting. At deluxe movie palaces, films were often accompanied by entire symphony orchestras. But there’s a lot of debate about what that should sound like. If a score or cue sheet for a given film survive, Anderson tries to track them down. Some never existed, others have been lost to time and neglect, and still more, he has found, just aren’t very compelling. Anderson agrees that silents can still draw a crowd, especially in New York, but he thinks that the genre has a bit of a messaging problem that confuses first-time viewers. When you hear ‘organ,’ you think church, funeral, baseball, he says. That’s really the only place we encounter an organ. If you tell them, ‘Hey, it’s a silent film with a theater organ,’ no one will know what that is.

A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (and in particular, no audible dialogue). In silent films for entertainment, the plot may be conveyed by the use of title cards, written indications of the plot and key dialogue lines.

When it comes to silent film, accompanists have infinite choices. Today, some accompanists try to recreate the sound of early cinema in their own performances, while others revel in using music that has been created since then. Lee Erwin’s score is played on the Mighty Wurlitzer, the king of cinema organs. Mont Alto recreates a typical small theater orchestra of piano, violin, cello, clarinet, trumpet, and percussion.
