My War is the second studio album by American band Black Flag. It polarized fans on its release in 1984 on SST Records over the LP's B-side, on which the band slowed down to a heavy, Black Sabbath-esque trudge, despite the reputation the band had earned as leaders in fast hardcore punk on its first album, Damaged (1981).
My War is the second full length album by the American hardcore punk band Black Flag. It was released in 1984 on SST Records. My War was released after a long period where the band could not release any albums due to a legal dispute with Unicorn Records.
My War, the second studio album by Black Flag, polarized fans on its release in 1984 over the record’s B-side, which they slowed down to a heavier Black Sabbath vibe. Polarizing, considering their first album Damaged earned them a reputation for being one of the biggest hardcore punk acts of the 80’s. The line-up had shrunk from five to three members: Henry Rollins (Vocals), Bill Stevenson (Drums), and co-founder Greg Ginn (Guitar, Bass). Ginn played bass under the name Dale Nixon after he kicked out Chuck Dukowski, another founding Black Flag member.

Black Flag then released the record themselves via Greg Ginn's SST, resulting in a lawsuit from Unicorn and a court injuncture preventing the band from recording under their name. During the two years between their debut and the recording of My War, Black Flag made a series of demos that showed them growing in leaps and bounds musically; tempos began to slow, with the obvious nods to Black Sabbath and locals Saint Vitus. All of these factors played heavily into My War's final outcome. The title track is one of Black Flag's most volatile songs, kicking off the album with Rollins' frantic shouts of "You say that you're my friend/ But you're one of them". The song sets the tone for the first portion of an album brimming with angst.
