The sole album from Country Funk's original incarnation, released in 1970, has confused a certain number of latter-day listeners since it's not especially funky (at least not in the James Brown or George Clinton sense of the word), and while there's a noticeable country-rock undertow in this music, there's just as much semi-psychedelic fuzz guitar, hard.

Considering that the . quartet Country Funk was neither country nor funk, perhaps its name was to blame for the fact that its 1970 eponymous debut fell into obscurity. This twang-rock album has since become as much of a vinyl crate-digger’s gem as similarly twangy (and rare) albums by Sand, Unicorn, Euphoria, and Prelude.

A great album of this obscure band. If you like early Crosby, Stills & Nash or the late Byrds or Crazy Horse guitar (without Neil's voice) on 'Everybody Knows this is Nowhere', the funkier parts are more similar to early Little Feat and the softer parts are rather in the range of Matthews' Southern Comfort.... but all recorded years earlier . So in retrospective an underrated , renovating country -rock act...In the 80's and 90's there was a band called "Dumptruck" that sounded very like "Country Funk". Also bands like "Armageddon" or "Earth Island" could be mentioned on the more psychedelic tracks. Highly recommend stuff!
I would bet the Country Funk album was received the same way albums by bands like Starry Eyed And Laughing were.Just hangers on. Copycats wearing their hearts on their sleeve. Be it allegiances to Byrds or Beatles, Crosby, Stills, Nash or Young. I never really looked into it. I've always just kind of accepted this record for what it is. A good solid listen. I can look past the obvious nods and hear a band paying tribute to the very same bands I love in a real honest way, all the while pulling their own moves. It's warm with harmonies and fuzzed out when you need it to be. You can guess what they've been listening to, but these sides are well written and jammed out just the right way, never bordering on the bad trip. This will probably never be a mega rarity. Copies are always around for reasonable prices without buying some crap reissue. It's a solid for any collection If this is your thing, then dig in.
