Born in Barcelona, Montserrat Caballe studied at the prestigious Liceu Conservatory and made her professional debut in Basel, Switzerland in 1956 as Mimi in Puccini's La boheme with the Basel Opera Company. However, it was in 1965 that Caballe was launched into stardom when she replaced an ailing Marilyn Horne in Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia at Carnegie Hall, having learned the role in less than a month.
Caballé studied singing in Barcelona and Milan and debuted in Basel in 1956 as Mimi in Puccini's La Bohème. In addition, she sang at the theater in Saarbrücken. From 1959 to 1962 she was engaged at the theater of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.
