Conversations with Myself is a 1963 album by American jazz musician Bill Evans. Recording with Glenn Gould's piano, CD 318, at studio sessions on February 6 and 9, and May 20, 1963, Evans used the then controversial method of overdubbing three different yet corresponding piano tracks for each song. Evans followed Conversations with Myself with Further Conversations with Myself (1967) and New Conversations (1978), both recorded in a similar vein.

An idea, however, the an album of Bill Evans playing with Bill Evans was hatched, and Evans was game. or rather the album Conversations With Myself. Conversations With Myself was a major undertaking, and perhaps, an even greater risk. Overdubbing was sneered at by most jazz people, looked at as "gimmicky" and "synthetic". Evans work on the ten tunes included here is truly inspired and amazing to behold. each keenly aware of what the others are doing, and perhaps more importantly, will do.

This was an inevitable record, the absorption of Bill Evans into the classical music world by having a concert pianist play his music. After all, the classical piano streams of Debussy, Ravel and Rachmaninoff, among others, do lead straight into Evans' introspective side. The only problem, perhaps, was in finding a major classical pianist who is open-minded and courageous enough to take this music on - and they found one in Jean-Yves Thibaudet, a young virtuoso from Lyons, France who also happens to be Decca/London's most heavily promoted pianist of the '90s.

That Bill Evans ventured into overdubbed pianos for this session was in 1963 a historic occasion. Overdubs were seldom in the age of Rudy Van Gelder- and Orrin Keepnews-produced sessions, which were sacrosanct in their on-the-spot nature. But by 1963 it was clear that very, very few people could play the way Evans did. Once he had himself to play along with, it was abundantly clear why he was so singular a musical mind.
