Larry and the Blue Notes were an American garage rock band formed in Fort Worth, Texas in 1962. The group is one of the more notable musical acts to emerge from the flourishing Fort Worth teen scene, and one of the few that had the opportunity to release a nationally distributed record. They are best known for the song "Night of the Sadist", which has been revived on several compilation albums.
The artwork of the legendary Blue Note jazz record label has come to represent everything that is brilliant and innovative in album cover design. Having escaped the Nazi regime in Germany in the early 1930s Lion found his way to New York and in 1939 he helped his friend from his teenage years escape Germany in the weeks after the outbreak of World war II. That friend was the gifted photographer Francis Wolff (below left), he like Lion (below right) was Jewish and the two men set about making Blue Note a marque of quality. Wolff passed away on 8 March 1971 in New York City. His gift to the world is that he singlehandedly redefined what we have come to think of as jazz photography

Larry & The Blue Notes are one of the oldest inclusions I have made, a solid bit of driving hammond heavy psych, and Stack Waddy will probably be familiar to some of you as an infamous Mancunian sleazy blues band which was an early signing to UK radio DJ John Peel's (RIP) record Label 'Dandelion'. Similarly to Red Dirt (see vol. 40) they play heavy blues riffs that draw the attention of proto doom/metal fans due to their aggressive edge . Raven - Can't You See (1975) 07. in and out. Larry & the Blue Notes. Girls For Days, Legs For Miles. The Morlocks emerged from the ashes of early-1980s California garage band The Gravedigger 5, but with a heavier sound, more murderous songs, and the trademark snarl of singer Leighton Koizumi. And then they disappeared, back into the grave. At one point there were even reports that Leighton was dead! Stabbed to death in the parking lot after a show. But the Morlocks are back in action, as of 2007/08, with all members alive and more or less intact! The Morlocks have real, authentic garage attitude and spirit.

Like any great Blue Note album of the 1950’s, everyone is high on heroin. Reefer madness was around the corner, so the possibility of grass is likely too. This album swings. Opener ‘Omicron’ changes tempo and meter 3 times in the first 30 seconds. Tale Of The Fingers’ is basically the best arco tune ever recorded. And it goes on and o. played upright bass for years and struggled to find any modern classical or jazz bass music that didn’t repeat old rhythms and mimic already existing standards. I listen to it often and find notes in it I forgot about or didn’t hear the previous time. And I sampled the hell out of it. Listen HERE. Marc Mac (4hero/Visioneers). Founding member of early breakbeat and drum and bass pioneers 4hero with Dego, Marc Mac are another from the old school to draw heavily on jazz influences and sampling that dominated so much new music in the early 90’s.
The finest in Jazz since 1939.
