Dahlem workshop reports. Sustainability or Collapse? An Integrated History and Future of People on Earth. 2 Human–Environment Interactions: Learning from the Past John A. Dearing. 3 Assessing and Communicating Data Quality: Toward a System of Data Quality Grading Robert Costanza.

Societal collapse is the fall of a complex human society. Such a disintegration may be relatively abrupt, as in the case of Maya civilization, or gradual, as in the case of the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The subject of societal collapse is of interest in such fields as history, anthropology, sociology, political science, and, more recently, cliodynamics and complex-systems science.

It is important to understand what Bendell means by collapse in this context. He does not necessarily mean an event taking place in a relatively short period of time all over the world all at once. Rather, he means severe disruptions of our lives and societies to a degree than renders our current institutional arrangements largely irrelevant. Instead, Bendell proposes a post-sustainability ethic. We must give up on the hope that our society can proceed largely on its current trajectory-with proper allowances, of course, for carbon emission reduction and climate change adaptation-and embrace what he calls deep adaptation.

The contributors focus on the human-environment interactions that have shaped historical forces since ancient times and discuss such key methodological issues as data quality.

The ninth century collapse and abandonment of the Central Maya Lowlands in the Yucatán peninsular region were the result of complex human–environment interactions. Large-scale Maya landscape alterations and demands placed on resources and ecosystem services generated high-stress environmental conditions that were amplified by increasing climatic aridity. 2011) in Biodiversity in Agriculture: Domestication, Ecolution and Sustainability, Land architecture in the Maya lowlands: Implications for sustainability, ed Gepts P, et al.
